Activities & Shopping Live Folk/Karaoke TOMOMI
From folk song to hard rock,
Experience a night deep in
uchina x american music.
If you’re in Kin Town and looking to have a deep night, we recommend “Folk Song Live Performance and Karaoke Tomomi.”
It’s a shop full of flavor where you’ll be greeted by Tomomi Maekawa, a veteran-drummer shopkeeper with a distinct personality.
Some decades ago, at age 19 Mr. Maekawa formed a rock band, “Rustics.” After staying active in musical performance in A-Sign bars and clubs inside American military bases, he finally had his own store openings, first in Nakanomachi Koza, then in Kadena, and then at the present-day store.
After many years leading the life of a drummer, the genres of his performance have expanded from hard rock to include enka, popular songs, and even folk songs. He currently serves as leader in the “YUGAFU BAND” where he shows off his veteran skill with the drums and eight shimadaiko.
Now for the various faces of the “YUGAFU BAND.”
With this shop as a base, they’re active even outside the prefecture!
The taiko drums, tools-of-the-trade, are packed with messages from visiting customers.
Also, from his long years as an active artist, his personal connections abound. A wide range of customers, including leaders in each field, come into the store.
One night is not enough to listen to the depths of his personal experience.
When asked about his younger days in a band he said:
“During the Vietnam war, customers were often in a bad temper. Customers always started fights with each other and plenty of cups were thrown. But even when that happened the show absolutely couldn’t stop. Because, if it were to stop, things would heat up. Instead, the show would continue without stopping, the fights would settle down, and we would all sing together.”
After which he continued to talk, spontaneously recounting one story after another.
His stories that gave the feel of the way things were under the American occupation were also very interesting.
The store also holds a stage show around once every two months.
“Events are irregular but we aim for Butsumetsu. It’s a live performance on the day of Buddah’s death. (laugh) That way the customers won’t be decreased due to conflicting business.”
So please be sure to visit while inquiring about the timing of Butsumetsu.
Of course, it’s also okay just to casually drink alcohol and sing karaoke.
